Early Settlers in Ontario, Canada
about 19th century life in rural Canada
Early Settlers in Ontario, Canada, was written by my grandmother, Wilhelmine Hogg Sias. My mother found Grandma’s sheaf of yellow pages when she and my dad moved to the homestead at Lake Lucy. I did my best to put those mixed and scattered pages into a photocopied book for the family. Grandma was born in Canada in the 1870s and ‘80s, when the community was iced in during winters with no access in or out. They lived with American Indians and blizzards, cared for themselves and each other, built schools and churches, and made their own entertainment. Her tales about growing up in Parry Sound on the shores of Lake Ontario are such fascinating reading that Woodsmere Press published it.
